File sharing has streamlined the production process for a directory published by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) in conjunction with its annual New York Photography Show. Advertisers’ entries come from around the world and feature world-class photography. AIPAD manages the process by requiring advertisers to send files directly to Anaconda. We troubleshoot the files and then place each entry with low res images on the FTP server so AIPAD can lay out the pages. As spreads are completed, the designer returns the files to the server so we can impose the job. Complex projects like a coffee table book are ideal candidates for file sharing. “Women of Achievement in Maryland History” is a 464-page book that pays tribute to over 300 individuals. Use of the FTP server streamlined the production process with the designer, but it was in the final stages that file sharing saved the day. Coming down to the wire, a vintage photograph was needed to complete a spread. Anaconda was able to contact an outside source, describe what we were looking for and secure a high res image within hours. File sharing can also be used to maintain client resources, such as a library of frequently used images. How the FTP server is utilized is as individual as the way you work.
